An unsatisfied actor turned playwright-spokesman for the workingman, Clifford Odets found early and instant success with works like Waiting for Lefty and Awake and Sing! Like many of his theatre colleagues, he was eventually lured to Hollywood with the promise of fast cash that would help support his playwriting endeavors back home. (His poorly received Paradise Lost was draining funds from his Group Theatre when he headed west in 1936.)
